The RADAR-COVER project aims at the development of prototype SENTINEL-1 land-cover products. Compared to its predecessor C-Band SAR missions, the European Remote Sensing ERS-1 and ERS-2 and the ENVISAT satellites, the new SENTINEL-1 satellite, the first in a series of satellites developed to meet the requirements of the European Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) programme, will provide close to daily acquisitions. In combination with the available dual-polarization mode, the performance of SENTINEL-1 concerning the generation of operational land-cover products can be expected to increase tremendously. Therefore, RADAR-COVER aims at the simulation of the SENTINEL-1 performance using existing C-Band SAR data acquired by ERS-1/2 and ENVISAT. RADAR-COVER started in November 2007 and lasts for six months.
